Start-up of PMDG's B777
Important note: this tutorial only presents the actions strictly necessary to start the motors.
For putting the aircraft into service, other actions are essential (including loading the flight plan) and will be the subject of other tutorials.
1 - Switch to "Cold and Dark" (for this startup and all subsequent ones) in the MDCU Menu:
Select “PMDG SETUP”
Select “STATE LOAD”
Select “COLDDARKGPU”
Press the EXEC button (lit white) on the MCDU keyboard
Below is the external power supply of the B777.
2 - Preparing for startup: the numbers in parentheses correspond to those in the Overhead Panel images
Battery: ON (1)
Primary EXT PWR: ON (2)
APU: START (3). Note: in principle, the flight plan is loaded before starting the APU.
Secondary EXT PWR: ON (4)
Voice Recorder Auto: ON (A) (optional)
Commissioning of the inertial unit (B): can be started at this time to anticipate loading of the flight plan.
Wait for the dashboard displays to come on (1 to 2 minutes)
The dashboard is in service
We can follow the start of the APU:
And check that it is operational
Center console
Throttle: IDLE (5)
FLAPS: 0 (6)
Speed Brake: DOWN (7)
TRIM and PITCH: rest (8)
FUEL R and L: coupes (9)
Panel to the left of the CDT
Oxygen Mask to test (10)
Dashboard and EFIS center console
Press the CHKL button (checklist display)
Validate the line "Oxygen ...tested 100%"
Note: The selection of displays on this screen is located to the right of the FCU
Commissioning of ADIRS (delay modifiable in the EFB)
3 - Loading the flight plan
The description of loading the flight plan and all the options linked to it will be the subject of another tutorial.
At this level we believe that the pushback has been done and that the engines can be started.
4 - Starting the engines
Right electrical circuit on AUTO (12)
Hydraulic pumps ON (13)
Left electrical circuit on AUTO (14)
"AIR" circuit C1 and C2 on AUTO (15)
We can check the correct operation of the circuit on the lower ECAM
Set the "SEAT BELTS" switch to AUTO (16)
Set the BEACON to ON (17)
Set the fuel pumps to ON (18). The central pumps should only be activated if there is fuel in these tanks.
Starting engine 2 (19)
FUEL CONTROL R to RUN (20). The 2 levers are below the throttle.
Monitoring engine start 2
When 2 is started, the start selector switches to the NORM position, engine 1 is started with the same process and FUEL CONTROL L to RUN (C).
The selector 1 returns to NORM when the engine is started
The display is symmetrical on the lower EICAS. (EICAS is the Boeing term for this type of screen, and it is ECAM at Airbus).
The lower EICAS serves many functions (including the integrated checklist), monitoring of the engines (N1 and EGT) is then done on the upper EICAS
To finish, we cut off the APU (21) and put the "RUNWAY TURNOFF" on ON (22)
